My idea for the project is to try and capture the atmosphere of living with roommates in the center of a college town. I want to show the idea of living your own life while packed in with other people. Or those moments of being solitary, for example while studying or doing homework, while the lives of other people are present and going on around you. To do this I want to capture a sense of depth, using sounds that are muffled to portray what it is like hearing things through walls, from both inside and outside, and mixing them with sounds in the immediate surroundings. While the sounds in the immediate surroundings may be louder and more clear, the subject or attention will be on the background noises. I want both the foreground and background noises to be somewhat clear on what the sound is so I will choose distinct sounds. For the foreground I am thinking of things like cooking, writing on paper, showering, playing video games. For background noises, vacuuming, watching tv, parties, people walking past outside, cooking, conversation, footsteps, the raccoons that screech outside my window every night. I am hoping these sounds will make the soundscape immersive and relatable. I’m hoping that the listener will be able to follow what is happening in the soundscape. For example a change in setting such as walking to another room, or someone else in the house moving to another room. I plan on using footsteps and the sound of doors opening, as well as a change in the dampening of background noise to show getting closer or farther away from it.
